Since O'Neal's departure following the 2003-04 season, Bryant has become the cornerstone of the Lakers franchise, and was the NBA's leading scorer during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
In 2006, Bryant scored a career high 81 points against the Toronto Raptors, the second highest number of points ever scored by a single player in an NBA game. He also remains the youngest player in NBA history to have 20,000 career points.
Bryant is a shooting guard who is capable of playing the small forward position on some occasions. He is known for his ability to create shots for himself, and is an adept outside shooter, sharing the single-game NBA record for three pointers made with twelve. He posseses outstanding ballhandling skills, and has a knack for alluding would be defenders. He uses his speed and atheletic ability to escape double and triple teams, and has an uncanny ability to finish at the basket. Aside from this, he is also a standout defender having made the All-Defensive 1st or 2nd Team 7 of the last 8 seasons.
