Philadelphia 76ers Roster Report 2009-06-30

Philadelphia 76ers Roster Report 2009-06-30
DRAFT PICKS:

Jrue Holiday, G, 6-3, UCLA (first round) -- Sixers like him for his defense and ability to play both guard positions, though he expects to play the point in the pros. Likely to be a reserve, at least to start the season.

FREE AGENT FOCUS: It's all about Andre Miller. Miller becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1. If the Sixers cannot come to terms with him, the best chance for Miller to get more than the mid-level exception is a sign-and-trade deal, which would allow the Sixers to get another quality player in return. Should Miller leave and the Sixers get nothing in return, they'd have the mid-level exception with which to improve.

PLAYER NEWS:

--F/C Marreese Speights is expected to join first-round pick Jrue Holiday, NBDL guard Blake Ahearn and undrafted Temple swingman Dionte Christmas on the team's combined entry with the Nets in the Orlando Pro Summer League on July 6-10. Ahearn apparently has accepted, while Christmas is looking into other offers.

--F/G Andre Iguodala was in the Sixers' war room during the draft and said he gave some input.

MEDICAL WATCH:

--F Elton Brand (right shoulder surgery) is playing basketball again and expected to be 100 percent prior to the start of training camp.

--F/C Jason Smith (left ACL surgery) has begun basketball activities wearing a brace and should be ready to go for training camp.
