Philadelphia 76ers Roster Report 2008-09-19

Philadelphia 76ers Roster Report 2008-09-19
DRAFT PICK:

Marreese Speights, F, 6-10, Florida. While the Sixers liked the way Speights played in the NBA Summer League, he needs to get stronger and improve his conditioning and is likely to be the 11th or 12th man.

PLAYER NOTES:

--F/G Andre Iguodala is thrilled that Mo Cheeks will be the Sixers' coach for at least two more years.

"Coach Cheeks is what we call a player's coach," Iguodala said. "Being one of the few players with his jersey retired in the arena and having an NBA championship, he can relate to the ups and downs of players during the season. He thinks like a player while coaching, which is a sense that can't be taught -- kind of like heart."

--F Elton Brand has been working out regularly at the Sixers' practice facility. He's been concentrating on his conditioning and improving his strength after missing the first 74 games for the Clippers last season with a torn Achilles' tendon. He hasn't scrimmaged with his new teammates yet.

"We're not playing five-on-five now because right now it's more individual drills," Brand said. "Andre Iguodala has been there. Sammy Dalembert has been there. Lou Williams was just here (recently) doing sprints. Andre Miller and the younger guys like Thaddeus Young are still working on individual stuff right now."
