Philadelphia 76ers Notes, Quotes 2008-10-24
--In an NBA.com survey of the league's general managers, the Sixers were picked as the team that made the best overall moves by 51.9 percent of the GMs. Elton Brand earned 66.7 percent of the votes in balloting for the single player who'll have the biggest impact. The Sixers also finished tied for third with the Bucks at 14.8 percent for the league's most improved team in 2008-09. The Heat and Trail Blazers (25.9 percent) tied for first.

--The Sixers reduced the roster to 14 by waiving free agent F Antywane Robinson and later C Jared Reiner. That means the Sixers will open the season with 14 players.

--The Sixers completed the preseason with a 4-3 record despite losing two of their last three games.

--C Samuel Dalembert missed the last three preseason games with a sprained and bruised right knee. X-rays were negative. He was optimistic that he'd be healthy and ready for the season opener against the Raptors.

--The Sixers picked up third-year options on F Thaddeus Young and F/C Jason Smith. The second-year players, each of whom was a first-round pick in 2007, were already under contract for this season. Young, who played mostly out of position at power forward last year as a rookie, started the preseason by hitting 7-of-14 three-pointers. That's a good sign for the Sixers.

--The Sixers have 14 guaranteed contracts, with free agents Jared Reiner and Antywane Robinson, each of whom is on a non-guaranteed, make-good contract, trying to nail down the 15th and final spot.

MAIN REASON SIXERS CAN WIN: The team has more quality, experienced depth to support an improved starting lineup featuring a legitimate low-post scorer (Elton Brand) for the first time since Charles Barkley.

MAIN REASON SIXERS CAN LOSE: If the perimeter players cannot knock down the open jumpers created by Brand's presence or Brand misses an extended period due to injury (he sat out the first 74 games last season with the Clippers due to a ruptured Achilles' tendon).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think we can make it happen this year because at the end of last year, you can see we turned things around with the group of guys we had. Now we have additions to the team that's really going to improve us, so I think we'll be a surprise." -- C Samuel Dalembert.
