The Philadelphia 76ers have been without their leading scorer for the past four games, and Elton Brand isn't expected to return until mid-January.
The Utah Jazz, though, have even bigger problems. The Jazz could face a third game in a row without their top three scorers on Monday when they host the 76ers, who are looking to avoid a fourth consecutive loss.
Philadelphia (12-17) was expected by many to contend for one of the top four spots in the Eastern Conference after signing Brand in the offseason, but instead has been one of the league's biggest disappointments. Brand's 15.9-point average is down nearly five points from the 20.5 points he averaged in 2006-07 - his last full season - and he's been bothered by a pair of injuries in the first two months of the season.
Brand has missed the 76ers' last four games with a dislocated right shoulder. Philadelphia has lost its past three games without him, falling 105-101 in Denver on Friday after blowing a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter.
"We had some good moments, we played hard and executed on both ends," said forward Andre Iguodala, who led the Sixers with 24 points. "Guys came in and did their job, but there were a few mental mistakes at the end that we have to correct. ... We played good enough to win, we just didn't win."
Philadelphia suffered another fourth-quarter letdown in its first meeting with Utah. The Sixers led the Jazz (18-14) by four after three quarters at the Wachovia Center on Nov. 11, but were outscored 30-13 in the final 12 minutes, losing 93-80 despite 25 points from Andre Miller.
Many of the faces on the floor for that game won't be taking the court on Monday at EnergySolutions Arena. Aside from Brand, Utah stars Carlos Boozer and Paul Millsap were in the lineup.
But Boozer hasn't played since Nov. 19 because of a strained left quadriceps, and Millsap - who recorded 15 straight double-doubles from Nov. 24-Dec. 20 - has missed the past two games with a sprained knee ligament.
Millsap will miss at least another week, leaving the Jazz in an especially tight spot because of Mehmet Okur's lingering back pain. Okur, who was averaging 24.0 points and 11.3 rebounds in his three most recent games, has sat out Utah's last three contests. It's unclear if he'll play on Monday.
Even with a short-handed lineup that featured rookie Kosta Koufos starting at center, the Jazz put up an impressive effort Saturday in Houston. They battled back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to send the game to overtime, losing 120-115 after two extra sessions.
"We came back in the second half, but couldn't finish the game," said Andrei Kirilenko, who scored 20. "Our defense was good and forced Houston to shoot more jump shots in the second half."
Kirilenko has started the past two games with Millsap out, and though he's averaged 14.5 points and 12.0 rebounds, the Jazz need him to shoot better. Kirilenko is 13-for-45 (28.9 percent) in his last three games.
Point guard Deron Williams played his first game of the season against the Sixers in November after recovering from a left ankle sprain, and went 1-of-8 for seven points. Williams, however, had nine assists, and he's averaging 14.8 in his last five games against Philadelphia.
The Jazz have won three in a row overall over the Sixers, and 17 of 19 against them in Salt Lake City.
